This used to happen on the Channel Tunnel - all those Brits filling up to the brim just before loading their cars onto the trains.
Ironically those overfilled brimming petrol / diesel tanks - some made of plastic - are fine, however having a steel Autogas tank means you can't use the Chunnel.
