I'm not sure why the combined rating for that truck is so low at 22mpg. There is something wrong because that's the same rating as the 4x4.

Mid-30s is fairly typical mileage for a 4x2 Toyota; the 22RE is a very efficient engine.

I get 27mpg with my '89 4x4 around town with no special techniques, just a little coasting and keeping the speed under control.
