No spare for safety?

On some vehicles removing the spare could be considered a safety feature as it can come loose and cause injury in an accident. While on still others it is consider part of the energy absorption in the crash. So if you carry a spare be sure it is stowed correctly and not just thrown in the well, so it doesn't become another projectile in an accident.

Some rear mount systems cause additional vehicle damage in an accident. The placement of some spares makes it nearly impossible to change safely on the shoulder of the road. Try sliding out the spare from newer Caravan with traffic whizzing past. The thing is between the front seats hanging under the the vehicle in a cover. Can that be good for aero? Jacks and tools poor, for most cars.

Do I carry a spare? Yes. That one time you really need it makes it worth while.
