Having to keep Snert the S40 for a few more days, I'm doing some more experimenting with it.
The first tanks saw me driving the way I was hypermiling my own V50, just to see how they'd compare - ending with the technically identical S40 doing far better in the FE department, while driving better to boot.
Now I'm seeing how well the S40 does in normal driving, at normal speeds, and yes, even with normal tire pressure.
It still does far better than the V50 ever did.
Far better than the 0,01 Cd difference should allow for.
This is leading me to believe that my V50 has had issues since very early on in its life.
I've always found it astonishingly hard to reduce its fuel consumption, and found myself wondering how on Earth people on Spritmonitor got 52mpg or better.
But driving the S40 suddenly makes it seem simple.
@ 120 kph (74.5 mph)
S40 indicates 4 - 4.5 L/100 km (58.8 - 52.3 mpg) - it's rated for 4.2 (56 mpg)
V50 indicated 5.5 - 6 L/100km (42.8 - 39.2 mpg) - it's rated for 4.3 (54.7 mpg), that's what 0.01 Cd will cost @ speed.
