Perhaps this is an oversimplified conclusion to draw, but doesn't the simple fact that importing oil - rather than using our own resources - imply more of an environmental impact? That is, more energy is used to extract oil from the earth and then ship it overseas to the States, then it would be to drill here in the first place.
Perhaps an 'out of sight, out of mind' scenario?
Plus, the likelihood of regulations making drilling harder to do here.
