Rather ruins the gooey-happy Jane Austen novels, doesn't it?
Not sure I see a link old bean. Cromwell died in 1658 - although he was executed after death (!) in 1661. Ms Austen was born in 1775 so they were seperated by 117 years. More as she didn't start writing until the 1790s and her stories were more contemporary to her time - late 18th, early 19th century - than the mid-17th.

Cromwell is a controversial figure of course because of his puritanical views and hatred of anything to do with Catholics which lead to a lot of persecution especially in Ireland which has continued to cause problems since. And of course his role as Protector - did he do this to prevent corrupt politicians taking over after the king was removed, or did he allow himself to be tempted by the power himself ? Whichever he was a significant figure in British history.
