Liberals here are right-wing - i.e. more libertarian.
What you'd call liberal in the US, is socialist or social-democrat on this end.
Then again, most of the US (party) Democrats wouldn't fit in with the European left wing - they're too right-wing for that.
The Atlantic is pretty deep.
