I agree that outboard wheels complicate things -- the is probably interplay between air flow around the main body and the wheel fairings. The forward most piece (the nose of the car) would likely cause the wheel fairings to "see" slightly higher pressure, and the air would be "moving" somewhat sideways in relation to the direction of travel.
I hope to see what a low drag "single volume" shape is capable of, with my open source CarBEN EV car.
