Yes.
Driven the same way over the same route, the S40 got 10% better mileage.
The S40
- is 0.01 Cd point better;
- has 195 / 15" tyres instead of my 205 / 16" ;
- has 2 tyres of an older, less efficient version;
- has far bigger mirrors

It regenerated fairly often as well, but only for short periods, and unnoticeable if it weren't for the ScanGauge.
I've spotted 4 regenerations in 1500km, but I may have missed one.
Quite a few regenerations on my V50 last longer than those 4 combined .

That would be my advice if it has to be a diesel.
There's plenty of troubles with them - it's not limited to Volvo.
Better search one that will tolerate biodiesel than one with a DPF.
