Hey Paul, sorry to hear about the computer problems.
Once you recover from all this, was wondering if the files are too large to back-up on a flash drive. I've had computer crashes before and know it's not fun to have to re-compile all your data. If the files are too large for a flash drive, maybe a DVD back-up. Or maybe just upload the files to the Wiki as a temporary file of some sort that only you (or a few others) have access to. Not sure how the Wiki works for something like that.
Just curious, which Linux version were you using? I have a dual boot system with Win 7 and Ununtu on it. Not a real Linux user, just wanted to try it out. But I do like it better that Windows.
Anyway, good luck with the new system and I hope all goes well for you on it.
