All you need to hook up an mpguino is a fuel injected car with a vehicle speed sensor, meaning most 1987 and newer autos. It'll be much easier to get a 1996 or newer USDM auto with an OBD-II port, and a $60 Utragauge, for precision instantaneous and average mpg readouts. I wouldn't drive an earlier deathtrap anyway. Give me something with dual airbags, a collapsible steering column, and an engine block that drops in a collision.

If you just have to drive an antique, you'll have to hypermile with tools equivalent to a hammer and chisel - a vacuum gauge and tank by tank odometer/fuel log book.
