On my Civic I was starting to have the same issue with my battery going dead last fall because I was only driving short trips and they were always near dusk or early morning so I had my lights on, a 2amp charge on the battery over night and my battery was happy the rest of the winter, it seems like wiring in a 1amp charger in with a block heater would be a great improvement and would help your battery last enough longer that it would pay for it's self, short trips tend to be death for batteries.
