Does the speedometer have marks to show you the max speed in each gear? if so then go about half the speed in each gear then shift to the next higher gear.

The bad intake air sensor could be either for air temperature or for maas air flow. Either one will affect the systems imputs for feedback and fuel volume control.

I would replace the sensor if it is affordable. You have OBD 2 (on board diagnostics) so you can have the codes read if there is a CEL (check engine light).

A scan gauge would give you good information, or a vacuum gauge which would be cheaper.
