I think it started out for oil.
Personally, I think not changing your oil is stupid, even more so now with modern engine technology. Heat breaks down oil, and turbochargers and lean burn engines produce a lot of heat. I would not run any oil past 10,000 miles (regardless of manufacturer claims) without having an oil analysis done to ensure that everything was still okay.
