Here is a link to a writeup I did about sign-vinyl - it's pretty awesome (the vinyl that is, not my writeup)

You know I used packing tape to secure my front fender splatts which were a super ghetto cardboard monstrosity. I was really nervous about doing it because I was sure the packing tape would be bad for the paint. I had every intention of removing them very quickly but they ended up on the car for 3 months. I removed one yesterday and I gotta say it came off pretty clean and easy. My paint is in decent shape so it doesn't want to come off but I was surprised anyway. I'd bet if you removed it carefully, maybe used a heat gun, packing tape could be an ok option even though my reaction was pretty much the same as yours
