I grew up with roof racks on cars and always found them to work great! we have a photo from when I was younger, we were hauling a wind generator in the back of a VW rabbit and the tail and tower were strapped to the roof rack, of course I think it was only 60 or so feet of tower in 20 foot sections, it worked great and that roof rack went on to haul all kinds of lumber.

How often you need your vehicle to perform this type of task is also a question that is helpful to ask, because if it's every day or every few days then getting a vehicle that it just fits in can be nice, but if it's just a few times a year then digging out the folding trailer or the roof rack with extra supports for ply wood can make the cost savings well worth it.
