I was talking to a bike mechanic who has been working on bikes for nearly 40 years and asked him if there would be an issue with going 50mph on a bicycle and he seemed to think you would be just fine as long as it was not a wal-mart bicycle.
I also heard just the other day that some schwalbe tires are a LRR tire and they would be ideal for a bike like this to help with a little extra range.
Of course the pedals are not there to help you get home when the battery runs dead... most people don't go on 20 mile electric bicycle trips, 5 to 10 miles at most, the pedals are there because it's a bicycle and bicycles have pedals and electric bicycles have pedals and a motor that can be removed without affecting it's use as a bicycle.
