There have been some test cars on air compression but one of the main drawbacks was low efficiency due to thermal loss, a lot of energy goes to heat when you compress the air.
In my opinion hydraulics with a generator (whether ICE or electric, doesn`t really matter) truly is the way to go. It`s very effective, simple, cheap, enviromentally friendly, safe and most of all, has been tested and confirmed by nature through billions of years. How do you think a spider moves his legs around?
