I'd say either a corolla or civic. You can actually find newer(ish) civics for around 5k and civics are plentiful everywhere. Is he willing to buy off ebay if it's close enough to check it out before you buy?

Cause this would be perfect. and you would NOT have to fix it up (maybe a little, but it was owned by a an ASE certified Auto Technician by profession), and... hey it's a 4 cyl and a manual!!!
