MAP=Manifold Absolute Pressure. It's the opposite of manifold vacuum or the atmospheric pressure that is allowed into the cylinders for compression.

If MAP and Vacuum are equal then you have 50% of the potential compression of the engine. Half of the available atmosphere can get into the cylinders past the throttle plate restriction.
