That's why the non-aero lamps have those slots in the bottom of the surround, to let out the air they'd otherwise catch. I bet there's many hours of design and testing went into the exact size and placement of those slots so there'd be minimal difference between those lamps and the higher up models' flush lamps.
Now there would be something to test. See if applying tape over those slots has an effect on FE.
