The fact of the matter is this

RWD means each pair of wheels does one task- utlmately more controllable and suited to someone who enjoys driving in a spirited manner..

FWD is great for folks who like to go quickly without having to be too concerned with the actual act of driving (understeer is "safer")

I like a decent FWD hatch as much as the next man (mk1/2 golf, pug 205/309 106 rallye etc) BUT, for getting in, through and out a corner either neatly OR on fire backwards through a hedge, RWD wins

HOWEVER, I'm pre disposed to driving "low poewer" (relatively) RWD cars, so for me, part of the fun is maintianing momentum by maximising the speed throught the bend with no loss of traction

If you want a fun, frugal fwd car- get a Ford Focus-the mk1 has a grand chassis if you have some cajones

as for daily smiles- I love the idea of George done up like an early 90's carlos saintz Celica
