On my car, I moved the engine forward of the front wheel centerline. This allowed me to end the fenders right behind the tires - even shorter then what you show.
Then, the windshield I cheated back as far as possible, and made the cockpit only 38 inches wide at the shoulders.
Theory (hope??? Dream??) is the air from the windshield base will spill over the sides of the car and help fill the holes behind the fenders. Maybe when done I'll have a lower Cd as I kind of have two frontal areas - one kind of behind the other.
Three seats makes the car for sure wider, and wider is what is really hurting my frontal area. I gave up and made my car a tandem 2 seater.
