Do it from the inside but as close as possible to the grill that way it looks nice and still works. I would block the whole upper grill at least, i did on my escape with about 50% of the bottom opening and it never gets hot.
I'm not sure how much it helps with aerodynamics but it sure helps with warming up the engine in the cold weather
