WAY more lithium batteries. Super expensive batteries. Expensive AC motor, Expensive controller. Making the batteries safe is not the major expense in that car. GM should just copy what Tesla did, but in a much scaled down version (since the GM battery pack is a tiny fraction of the Tesla pack). Recent estimates say the Volt is going to cost around $35,000-$40,000. They have some cash to waste on the problem. P.S.: $40,000*3.5 > $108,000
