I scored a copy of 'AERODYNAMICS FOR NAVAL AVIATORS',by Hugh Harrison Hurt,Jr.,University of Southern California,Los Angeles,California,August,1959.
In the section on AIRFLOW SEPARATION,page 58,is Figure 1.26.'Airflow Separation (sheet 2 of 2),a photo, from Douglas(Aircraft Corp.)' Report NO. ES 29075,showing turbulent separation on a surface illustrated by reversed flow.
If you establish the centerline of the body of revolution being studied, then determine the tangent angle at the point of separation on the body you find it to be a 22-degree angle.
This is 1959.
W.A.Mair published his 'optimum' 22-degree boat tail report in 1968.
What is old,is older, and is new again!
The image is pretty grainy, but maybe Saturday Al can help me post it.
My aging Hippy neighbors claim that there was a fella every year at the Rainbow Gathering, who's answer to any question was,"22!" Perhaps he was onto something besides the acid.
