More ground electrode might prevent plug fouling, that's why they may improve small engine performance. A good engine doesn't burn very much oil, and plug fouling is not an issue. I run a regular NGK copper plug (indexed) in my 15 psi 300 whp Nissan turbo L28, and have not seen any misfiring up past 6000 rpm. And that same setup gets 29mpg cruising 70mph.
