Our unit definitely isn't the same as the higher-powered Euro variants, but fuel economy should be similar. I imagine the extra development needed will be to meet US emissions.
In the meantime, Hyundai already has a 170 horsepower 2.0 and a 190 horsepower 2.2. The Koreans are really embracing new diesel. Then again, the Cruze is a partly Korean project.
The issue is, as you tune for more horsepower, you start to veer away from economy. Some of the more economical modern diesels I've driven are the lower-powered ones.

YMMV. My highway driving is closer to mixed EPA, given tollway traffic and climbs.
The 1.8 6AT on the same route got around 28-32 mpg.
The diesel should hit 45-47 in US highway conditions, but in my opinion, to make 50+ mpg easier will require a better transmission.
