I agree.If they went by tufts alone (and I suspect that this is all they had available at the time),that they might infer fully attached flow,when in reality,the longitudinal vortices were holding the tufts in place.
The lower body should support good flow.
The plan taper will be designed more around a 2-D flow section ( I believe that a 3.94:1 section has the lowest drag) which around the sides should be very good.
The suspect area are the two greenhouse side to roof intersections and I would bet they're dirty.
Since they have the car it would be instructive to park it in the test section of the nearest tunnel and fire up the fan.
She would look very futuristic to many today.
