I have to disagree with you there, diesel vs. gasoline will affect the efficiency of the engine, but factors like weight and rolling resistance determine
how much power is required from the engine. The engine determines
how efficiently the power is produced, but if you reduce the the power required, it's going to help just as much percentage-wise either way.
