Can there be any other sports in a country which was built on cars and cheap fuel? Where you get media attention for being big, bad, loud and fast?
Do kids in non-motorised countries spend most of their time playing monster truck or race car computer games, or do they run around playing ball?

Simplicity. People like simplicity. Notice how ads often use slogans such as "Make your life simpler", "Wanna know how? It's simple!", etc. Automatic transmission. For many people simplicity is part of being lazy. Just a simple sport, round and round, no complicated rules to remember, no higher brain functions to employ. The simpler something is, the more people can grasp it, and more people is what we want, right? Are all the local freeways jammed when there is a chess tournament in town?
What kind of toys do little kids like? The complicated brain teasers? No! The battery powered gizmos with flashing lights and LOTS of noise. Yeah, noise is good, we like noise.
