Yes the old boats ride nice don't they? Practice your driving skills. Also if you can reroute a few miles longer but with a higher mpg can reduce overall fuel consumption. i.e. I turn left out of my drive because a right turn is up hill. Once my tub is rolling however I can coast up the small steep hills and add fuel going down the backside on that part off the route. I really pick up speed for very little fuel doing this as gravity can really pull on that metal.
Learn to throw your weight around and you may pick up a few mpg. My stationwagon weighs 4200 ish, I figure yours is a little lighter, not much.
I wouldnt modify your Granddads car for a while.
