That's no longer silly, that's plain dumb.
No scientifically oriented person would ever weigh a small change in weight by measuring the differential between 2 massive weights - and definitely not with scales that only show 1 lbs difference - when a gallon is only about 7 lbs !
You'd get to the point where the measuring error is half the measured value.

Totally agreed. I'm a bit competition oriented (and compete in other SCCA areas) so I would be incredibly frustrated if I took Friday off of work, drove up to NY, competed, and all of my results and or competitor results were essentially invalidated by crappy measurement equipment.
It seems to me a pump with an accurate auto-shutoff would be far more accurate than the current method. And for extreme classes they could simply require a fuel cell.
