Also adjust the vavles, forgot about the old mechanical lifters. They use flat shims so be sure to source a bunch before tackling it.
The timing by ear is very evident, you will hear when your timing is set to far but if you adjust it in stages of 0.05mm it will not blow up the engine/mass destruction right away, holes in pistons occur when something is really wrong and more with the direct injection/high pressure diesels.
