i think i'd leave the spark plugs attached and hooked up. the spark wants to go SOMEWHERE, and if you don't give it an easy path, it will do something not nice inside the coil/distributor.
Optionally, ground the ends of the plug wires to metal on the engine.
With the valves disabled, it should work. i'll be curious to see your results!
