Old thread, but it deserves participation. I did the following.

1) removed valve cover and gaskets including valve bolt seat grommets.
2) hit the cover with a light coat of paint remover
3) used a medium grade sand paper to remove most of the paint
4) applied another light coat of paint remover
5) last stage of light sanding
6) wiped entire cover down with Final Lean
7) plugged holes to avoid paint contaminating engine internals
8) used a flat black ceramic engine paint that is safe for up to 2000 degrees. Applied 3 coats.

Turned out decent. It was still damp in a place or two when i took this pic
