when the clutch isnt engaged, the loss should be very similar to any other idler pulley. pulley typically weighs more than just an idler though, so its having a bit of a flywheel affect.

i would see if your car or another with a similar engine was ever availible w/o a/c. often times you can get a simple pulley that will bolt in place of the a/c compressor. gutting your compressor isnt going to be worth it.
