Since you are going domestic,I have the best of both worlds for you if you want a hatchback/wagon.You can try a Pontiac Vibe, it has the same engine as a Toyota Corolla so it can be easily repaired due to the demise of Pontiac.It is a good car, I have an 07 with 118000km and have had no problems so far, I am still on my original brakes and there is someone over on Genvibe that was able to get over 400,000 mile on a Vibe on just regular maintenaince
If you are good at ecomodding you can get 6.9L/100km.
