Based on some wind tunnel testing of some high end sport bikes the height of the tail section, and the gap between the rider and the tail section can be crucial.
My bike might not be a sport bike, but I can very much tell that my tail section is too high. if I could squeeze one more grocery bag into the lower part of the tail, I would have it about even with my mid back so that when I lean forward the air could run off my back and onto the tail. Compromises, compromises.
