Yes, COM1 gets removed from the list when I unplug the cable. Not sure if I said this before, but I wired up the ends of my serial cable as a test plug (handshaking lines tied together and rx tied to tx and I received back what I was sending with the Arduino serial monitor, so I'm pretty sure I'm transmitting and receiving correctly on the USB to serial link.

I don't need to put any jumpers on for the serial version of the board, right? Just if using external power on the USB version?

Also, I was foolish enough to order the serial version before I checked to see if either of my computers had a serial port, that's why I'm doing the USB to serial converter cable. If worst comes to worst, I suppose I'll just have to buy the USB kit, though that's basically doubling the money I've already sunk into this.
