Only things that "make sense" would be putting holes in the airbox ahead of the filter (guys do it and think that it helps even though it doesn't) and/or punching bigger holes in the cat and/or muffler, which not only don't help, but that's a pretty new car to be screwing up in that manner. I think the guy was pulling your leg.
