I had a regular route where I drove 160 miles each way, and would fill up each at each stopped, this worked out to about 1/4 tank (4.5~ gallons) eventually I realized that one direction was lower and always got better gas mileage to show it, so I would just fill up once a day since the car would still have 1/2 a tank at the end of the day.
As long as he's inputting EVERY ounce, the averages will fix themselves.
