It's worth noting that at the same pressure, your contact patch is roughly the same size regardless of tire width or diameter. There's some fun science about scrub meridians and all that good stuff but I feel that's mostly relevant in racing or high performance driving.

For anecdotal happy fun times, I recently changed from 245/65-17" to 225/75-16" tires on my 02 WJ and immediately felt the difference in coasting, and returned unexpectedly good average consumption on last weekend's ~800mi road trip. I'm going to stick with narrower tires, personally.
