I forgot to mention that my BMW can get better mileage when I really try. If I keep it under 60 MPH on the highway, I can get ~28 MPG; a couple of weeks ago, I averaged 70 MPH and 24 MPG up to Winston-Salem, but that was a combination of traffic and 80 MPH sections. On the way back, I got stuck in race traffic near Concord, NC and was getting ~38 MPG at 1000 RPM in 5th gear at 28 MPH (the OBC said 42, but my testing shows it's 7% optimistic).
