I suspect you're right, I think 1680rpm is a bit too far down the torque curve, especially when you consider my normal commute has me climbing 600m on the way home.
But, having said that, because the 3.54 is already in the car (and those things are heavy), I'll give it a try at first.
At least I know third gear handles that climb OK and I can still change to the 3.9 after a month or two.
