Or consider what kind of FE is likely in an evacuation. My reading, and close questioning of over dozen people involved in evacs in their personal vehicles ahead of Katrina, Ike and some others was this:

1] 150-miles away from evac zones before fuel available, overall.

2] Bumper-to-bumper means 18-hours to cover those miles, thus 3-5 mpg regardless of brand/type/driver. This was at the low end. Some went fewer miles in just beyond 24-hours.

Thus, the problem is more one of fuel capacity over mpg of the vehicle chosen. A big ol' pickemup/SUV and a really big fuel tank trumped any other vehicle type. How 'bout that irony?
