i'm no rocket surgeon but..... the fuel pump pulls fuel through the strainer/sock which always sits at the bottom of the tank anyways, and anything that could hurt your pump/injectors/engine isn't going to float on top of the fuel. water is heavier than fuel be it gas or diesel and rolls around the bottom of the tank and would get sucked up if it gets to the fuel pick up which is still at the bottom. the pump is cooled by fuel that flows directly through the pump and over the armature as its sucked up and pushed to the engine, it's not cooled just by sitting in fuel, so as long as your pumping fuel and not actual fumes because you ran out of gas your pump is being cooled.
