I was at the day job earlier and didn't get to comment on this. I am using a little Alltrax controller just to get the bike moving, and until we get the Mars motor and P&S controller kit (and actually build it). In the Alltrax (AXE PM motor - no reverse) wiring diagram it says:

I take it that is to address your point about them having lower inductance...
