Well, I failed to mention previously that my existing driver's side mirror seems ready for replacement; it doesn't want to hold position very well and the range of adjustment is rather limited using the manual lever inside the car. I suspect the ball/socket mount inside the assembly is pretty worn out. From a strict recovering expenses point, you are almost certainly right, it would be very difficult to recover the $35. Fortunately, this would be an upgrade on a replacement that needs to happen anyhow.

I've seen the internally mounted 'bubble/fish-eye' mirrors used by others here, and certainly like the aerodynamic appeal of deleting the external mirror, but also know that they are a potentially significant compromise in terms of field of vision. I've got unfortunately limited faith in the civic to 'win' any accidental contact contests.
