I'm far from an expert, but getting a baseline MPG figure would be your first step. You might even consider an MPGuino or similar (SCII and UG won't work for you) to help get precise numbers.
On my Isuzu minitruck, I had considered a plywood bed cover but I didn't like the overall weight it would take. I ended up making a frame of 2x4s wedged (literally!) lengthwise into the box and then screwing sheetmetal over the top. Cheap, quick, effective, and lightweight.
Even though it's a truck, empty it out. Weight is an enemy. If your mind is always thinking of the MPGs, you'll figure out things along the way to try. Think outside the box as much as possible. Grab your comfy camping chair and a beer, and just stare at your truck for a while from front to back, you'll see small things to improve on. Good luck!
